Larry Jaffee will talk about the vinyl record and a new company that makes records from sugar beets!

One of this century's unlikeliest resurrections has been that of the vinyl record. Although assumed to be discarded by most at the end of the twentieth century, the report of its death was an exaggeration. Instead it has been steadily growing in popularity for the past two decades.

A record factory will soon rise in Iceland, the first one since the mid-1980s, by the name of Thermal Beets Records. What makes them unique is that the records will not be made from vinyl plastic, but actual sugar beets!

To discuss the resurrection of the vinyl record and this new innovative project, Larry Jaffee, co-founder of Thermal Beets and Making Vinyl, as well as the author of the 2023 book 'Record Store Day: The Most Improbable Comeback of the 21st Century' (Rare Bird Books, Los Angeles) will visit us and tell us all about it.

Ein ólíklegasta endurkoma aldarinnar hefur verið upprisa vínylplötunnar. Flestir höfðu verið búnir að afskrifa þetta form seint á síðustu öld en fregnir af dauða plötunnar voru stórlega ýktar. Síðustu tvo áratugi hafa þær orðið vinsælli með hverju árinu. 

Senn mun rísa fyrsta plötuframleiðslan á Íslandi síðan á níunda áratug tuttugustu aldar, Thermal Beets. En þar verða plöturnar ekki búnar til úr vínylplasti, heldur sykurrófum! 

Til að ræða upprisu vínylplötunnar og þetta spennandi nýsköpunarverkefni kemur Larry Jaffee, einn af stofnendum Thermal Beets og Making Vinyl, til okkar og segir frá.
